A Crooked Christmas Tree

This art project is a wonderful way to extend learning after reading "The Little Crooked Christmas Tree" written by Michael Cutting and illustrated by Ron Broda.

Art Project: Christmas Card

1.        Prepare watercolour paper by cutting or tearing to size (ripple watercolour paper is a good choice).  The card can either be a single sheet to be attached to a card later on or a folded piece of watercolour paper.
2.       Tape to a board using green painter’s tape.
3.       Demonstrate each step of the activity before the children do each step.
4.       With a pencil sketch a curved line the length that you want the tree.
5.       Give each child a length of thin green painter’s tape.  Attach small pieces of tape to the curved line from top to bottom.  The pieces will get progressively longer.  At the bottom attach a trunk.
6.      With a tealight rub a section at the bottom of the card which will resist the paint and become snow.
7.       Put a circle sticker in the sky which will be a full moon.
8.       With a large watercolour brush paint the entire card with clean water.  Before it dries paint the card with the desired colour.  I used blue but other colours could be used.  More than one colour can be used but choose carefully.  Also if two colours are used the children need to be extra careful not to paint, paint, paint, paint over and over.  Muddy paint can be made  this way.
9.       Sprinkle salt if desired.
10.    Let dry then take off all the tape and the circle sticker.

These are the songs we are practicing for the Mountview Musical which takes place on May 2.  Be proactive and begin to look for a red t-shirt now.

Les amis et l'amitié

Le jour de la Saint-Valentin est le 14 février.
Clique sur le mot Saint-Valentin
pour trouver les activités pour des amis.

We continue to explore Steven Covey's 7 habits of Happy
Kids and discovering how to find the "Leader in Me".
Have you tried the Student Schoolyard.

1. Be proactive.
2. Begin with the end in mind.
3. Put first things first.
4. Think win-win.
5. Seek first to understand, then to be understood.
6. Synergize.
7. Sharpen the saw.

In February we are learning about habit number five.
Seek first to understand then be understood.
Some of the goals are:
I can listen to others without talking.
I can look people in the eyes.
I can see more than one point of view and be
a problem solver.
I can take turns talking.

We can listen with our eyes as well as our ears.
Sadie is only a baby and doesn't have many words but if you look closely with your eyes and your heart she says a lot.
What do you think Sadie is saying?
You can't hear what Ethan has to say but do you know how he feels about his skiing adventure.

In our classroom we know that it's important to always give five when we listen to learn. When we listen to be a friend or to become leaders we always give six.
Can you tell Mom and Dad what giving six means?

Leader in Me

We are learning Steven Covey's 7 habits of Happy Kids and discovering how to find the "Leader in Me".
Try the Student Schoolyard by clicking Student Schoolyard.

1. Be proactive.
2. Begin with the end in mind.
3. Put first things first.
4. Think win-win.
5. Seek first to understand, then to be understood.
6. Synergize.

In September, we have started by building a foundation for the habits by learning about habits and paradigms.

Habits are something we do so often we don't even have to think about them.

We talked about good habits and decided that some of the good habits we already have are:

1) Eating a good breakfast before we come to school.

2) Putting our linkbooks open on our desk when we get

to school.

3) Washing our hands before we eat.

4) Reading every day.

We are having fun building new habits.

A paradigm is the way you see something. It is your point of view.

At the Peace Run we "Celebrated Differences" and talked about how it changes your paradigm if you celebrate differences instead of simply tolerating differences.

The Leader in Me/Habit 7

Habit 7
Sharpen the Saw
Goals:

I can learn my whole life, not just at school.
I can eat right, exercise, spend time with my family and friends, and read.
I can fill my life with positive experiences.

The Leader in Me

Habit 6

I Will Synergize

Goals:

I can learn from others.
I can work in groups.
I can take turns.

The Leader in Me

We continue to learn about Steven Covey's 7 habits of Happy Kids and discover how to find the
"Leader in Me".
Do you remember the first four habits?

1. Be proactive.

2. Begin with the end in mind.

3. Put first things first.

4. Think win-win.

Now we will begin to practice the fifth habit.

5. Seek first to understand, then to be understood.

I can listen to others without talking.

I can look people in the eyes.

I can see more than one point of view and be a problem solver.

In our classroom we are already good listeners.
We know how to give five to listen.
Can you you tell your Mom or Dad how you give five to listen?
Can you think of how we can give six to listen to understand?

Do you remember the first three habits?

Now we have begun to practice the fourth habit.

4. Think win-win.

I will think win-win.

Goals:

I can co-operate with others.

I can share.

I know that if we all have fun, we all win.

I can explain how my Emotional Bank Account works.

7. Sharpen the saw.
We have been working very hard on learning habit number one.
Ask your child how they can be proactive? They may also be able to tell you what being reactive means.
Habit One: Be Proactive
I have a “Can Do” attitude. I choose my actions, attitudes and moods. I don’t blame others. I do the right thing without being asked, even if nobody is looking.
